Relationships can be one of the most fulfilling and pleasurable areas in our life. Over time, however, our relationships can become full of tension, resentment, hurt and conflict causing pain and upset to one or both parties. Difficulties in relationships are one of the most common causes of unhappiness and often one of the main reasons that bring people to therapy.
An unhappy relationship can increase our chances of getting sick by up to 35%, with many people reporting high blood pressure, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and a weakened immune system as a result of relationship difficulties.
Poor communication is the main factor that causes issues in relationships. Many of the couples that I see claim they struggle with a feeling of not being listened to, or that their partner does not take time to understand what they are saying.
It can feel like a big step taking the decision talking to someone else about the issues in your relationship, especially as one of you might be resistant to attending counselling. However, rest assured; relationship counselling is not about who is right or wrong, it is about open discussion and helping you both trying to achieve the outcome you want.
